   Charlotte Callens
The wide colored fields of Charlotte Callens, either juxtaposed, touching with smoothness, interpenetrating or superposing, display with richness varied and shaded greys, enriched with pink and slight tinted whites. Stripped earth browns, recalling the atmosphere of the “Flat Country”, - the origin of the artist -, the cracking winds, the North Sea with transparent and icy waters, compose with warm orange-red surfaces, fringed with gold or browns with this unforgettable smell of old leather, which illuminate and warm up.

Charlotte Callens, originating from Wallonie, comes right from these areas wide open on the sea, hit by the winds, where the wideness is sovereign and the heritage of the great Flemish masters, and the neighbouring Dutch, a prestigious enrichment. Charlotte Callens however, although she was raised in the contact of their masterpieces, has found her roots in the colored field paintings of the American Rothko or in the abstractions of the Russian Poliakoff. Her paintings are totally non figurative, mainly geometric, although her works entitled Expansion des choses, Du cœur de toi-même, Temps d’un espace, A toi-même or bearing the date of their creation, express some instants of life.

The artist is building her works at the image of the wide areas of her country, shaped with pieces of clay, of fields, of water, richly textured, worked with care, on canvas, wood or other supports, until she obtains, at the contact of her fingers, the satisfaction of a tactile smoothness, together icy and velvety. A magnificent work to discover !

Charlotte Callens is graduate from the Institut Supérieur des Sciences Humaines Appliquées (ISSHA) in Brussels
Graduate from the Fine Arts School in Wavre (Belgique), where she obtained, in 1998, the highest distinction for her paintings on canvas
